(1189-92). On his return from the Holy Land, he was imprisoned by the Duke of Austria in Durnstein Castle. It seem likely that Richard used the diamond to ransom himself.
In the 16th c. the diamond appeared again when Henry II of France gave it to his mistress Diane de Poitiers. Diane is shown wearing it in a portrait made of her at Fontainebleau. The stone then vanished from sight for 400 years until, in 1950, an Indian maharaja sold it to the New York Jeweler, Harry Winston.
This jewel is has long been associated with royalty. It is said that it was first owned by Eleanor of Aquitaine, who may have been given it by her husband, Louis VII of France while he was on the Second Crusade (1147-49). If this is so, then this stone is the oldest diamond on record.
Elanor´s marriage was annulled, and she subsequently married Henry II of England. Richard the Lion-Hearted, Elanor´s son, is thought to have taken the diamond with him on the Third Crusade
