Normally, ground walking a target can be time consuming, especially if it is a large target. We let our imaginations run wild. Suppose that we could mount the magnetometre on a boom extending out the back of the Argo, wire the magnetometre into a laptop and also wire in a speedometer link so that we could call up a reading at a set distance, record it to the computer automatically, and work with the data once we get home. . . that could save lots of time.

We Try New Ideas - Not all Succeed . . .

We spent weeks pre-testing the readings under various field circumstances before we were able to develop a reliable reading standard. Regardless, once on the ice at a target, we did not get the results we had previously logged from a normal ground walk. There will be some rewiring, retesting, and new programming before we try again.

While all this is time consuming, we can afford it because we are all volunteers at this point. This is the sort of process which led to the portable x-ray sorter and the development of our air portable high torque drill. We are also working on a sample processing lab inside one of our trucks. On site processing of our samples means we can move more quickly in the field and return with results in hand.
