Diamonds can form under great pressure and high temperatures in the earth. They are associated with old and stable rock bodies. Diamonds are carried to the surface by magma which has come from deeper reaches of the Earth's interior. As the magma passes through the diamond bearing rocks, it carries diamoniferous materials with it toward the surface.

If the upward speed of the magma is great enough, diamonds get a free ride upwards and remain in their diamond form. If the magma moves too slowly, the diamonds often turn into graphite. Not all magma from deep within the earth will pass through diamond bearing rock on the way upwards. (more detail)
